Review: New Japanese Kushiage Restaurant, Kusabi, Serves Affordable Omakase At $68

You would have known that Orchard Plaza offers multiple omakase dining options like Sushi KYUU and YUTA. However, if you’re a big fan of Japanese deep-fried dishes to fresh sashimi, here's some good news for you!

Kusabi- a new Japanese Kushiage (Japanese deep-fried dishes) Bar, has recently opened its door at Orchard Plaza serving an Omakase course at $68. Helmed by the same folks behind Katachi Sushi Bar, OUROBOROS, and Hakata & Kushi Yamamoto located within the same mall.

The space creates a cosy and inviting ambience with its compact and comfortable setting and features a 13-seater counter bar- perfect for casual dining.

Appetisers

We began the course with some appetitsers featuring tangy pickled lotus root and a savoury bowl of greens with enoki mushroom. It is a perfect starter to awaken our taste buds.

12 Kinds of Deep-Fried Skewers

Next, we moved on to the main highlight of the menu featuring its deep-fried skewers. It comes with a variety of ingredients like chicken, pork-wrapped asparagus, seafood, vegetables, and even wagyu beef.

Each skewer was expertly coated and deep-fried to achieve a delightful golden brown crispiness. Notably, the scallop, fish, and wagyu skewers deserve a shoutout as the freshness was evident, and the wagyu beef is so tender.

3 Kinds of Oden

After the main course, we had a bowl of Oden served with fishcakes, daikon (Japanese radish), and konnyaku (konjac). The stew is so light and savoury which helped to wash down the greasiness in our stomachs and cleansed our palates.

Fried Rice Ball Chazuke

Before moving on to the dessert, we had the Fried Rice Ball Chazuke which includes a grilled rice ball accompanied by a delicate and flavourful broth. With every bite, the grilled rice ball provides a satisfying crispness, and the broth provides a comforting essence.

Dessert

We rounded the dining experience with a scoop of sweet and tangy yuzu sorbet that left us feeling refreshed and content after the meal.

Final Thoughts

The dishes served were good, and the price is undeniably affordable for an omakase meal in town. I would definitely come back again to indulge in this culinary delight!
