Mio Fine Foods Review: New Aesthetic And Zen Two-Storey Japanese Café, Serving Intricate Handcrafted Dishes along Neil Road

A fan of zen vibes and Japanese Food? — you have to check out the newly-opened Mio Fine Foods (美桜)!

For those who don’t know, Mio actually started off as an online delivery service and this is their very first physical joint! Located beside Apiary along Neil Road in Tanjong Pagar, look forward to their extensive menu serving traditional yet artisanal fine Japanese cuisine featuring stunning intricate handcrafted dishes. For beef lovers, keep your eyes peeled for the Wagyu section on their menu, featuring an array of mouthwatering dishes cooked with only premium A5 Japanese Wagyu!

The two-storey space is aesthetic and cosy, decked with a wabi-sabi interior featuring natural elements like wood, stones, and plants, filled with natural lighting during the day, which makes us feel like we are in an indoor garden. The whole place also gives off a zen and tranquil vibe, making it a perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle.

Lychee Oolong Tea

You may find a selection of tea like Genmaicha, Citrus Oolong, and Zen Garden to go with your meal. We have decided to try the Lychee Oolong, one of the most popular options among the crowd. The tea is light, boasting the fragrant aromas of Jasmine with floral lychee notes.

Sushi Ball (8 pieces)

We started our first dish with these beautifully plated and handcrafted assorted Sushi Balls featuring Southern bluefin tuna, yellowtail, squid, swordfish, cucumber, red radish, Japanese sweet egg, and prawn. The sushi balls are freshly served with a delicate texture. The rice to the ratio of the ingredients was also perfect.

Wagyu Sando

Next up was the Wagyu Sando served alongside perfectly seasoned lotus chips. This crunchy toasted sandwich comes with thick-cut juicy A5 Wagyu that melts in your mouth. It is savoury and seductive that we could not get enough of it!

You have to order this if you ever visit is a MUST order from us! But you might want to share it with someone as it can get quite greasy if you have the whole dish to yourself!

Nori Taco - Soft Shell Crab & Negitoro Uni

Another item we tried on the menu is their Nori Taco which comes in 3 flavours- Assorted Sashimi, Soft Shell Crab, and Negitori Uni. We went for the Soft Shell Crab and Negitori Uni filled in a battered and crispy seaweed taco shell. The soft shell crab has a light crunch on the outside and buttery soft meat on the inside, topped with mayonnaise and ikura. The Negitori Uni was fresh, but we just wished the uni was a tad sweeter!

Hotate Salmon Zaru Soba

Another beautifully decorated dish, Hotate Salmon Zaru Soba, that brings the flavours of the ocean together. Served with torched Hokkaido scallops and salmon, tobiko, sous vide egg yolk, buckwheat noodles, and Japanese dressing (served cold). It is light and refreshing!

Potato Nesuto Tempura

Not your usual potato — this tall stacked hand-shredded potato is perfectly fried to golden brown with a light crisp and aromatic flavour of truffle, topped with grated cheese. Served alongside tangy kaffir lime aioli sauce. Think an elevated version from your usual truffle fries! This is a must order for sharing if you’re a fries fan-tic like us.

.

Goma Goma

We ended the meal with this addictive black sesame dessert, Goma Goma. It comes with black sesame cake and housemade black sesame ice cream with a rich roasted nutty flavor, and finished off with delicious speculoos crumble.

Final Thoughts

I would give a 10 out of 10 for the dining experience and food! The café exudes a relaxing and calm atmosphere, making us feel like we are dining in an indoor garden. All the dishes served were so intricate and stunning. We appreciate the thought and effort behind each dish, and what impressed us is that it tastes as good as it looks!

We have to say that the Wagyu Sando and Potato Nesuto Tempura were our top picks. No doubt I will return soon to try the rest of the menu and start off my slow weekend right at this cosy space.
