Cafe Usagi Tokyo Review: New Outlet At Suntec City Unveils New Mochi Delights

If you are looking for an authentic taste of Japan but with a modern twist, you won't want to miss Cafe Usagi TOKYO. This matcha concept cafe is a collaboration between Japanese Chef/Creative Director Yuka Shigeno and Co-founder Artini, aiming to bring high-quality Japanese delights to individuals across the globe, starting with Singapore.

They have recently opened its doors at Suntec City, followed by its second outlet at TripleOne Somerset.

Look forward to sweet and savoury treats featuring their signature Japanese Flavoured Handcrafted Ice Cream, Mochi Ice Cream, Doriyaki Cake, and more that draw inspiration from nature, flowers, and buildings. Besides, Cafe Usagi TOKYO's menu uses only all-natural ingredients and coloring to enhance the flavors of each delight. They have recently launched a new line-up of desserts, including mochi delights and Cafe Usagi Rabbit Bread.

As we stepped into the cafe at Suntec City, it made us feel like we were right at home, featuring its wabi-sabi interior complete with clean lines, wooden furniture, rattan chairs, and neutral tones, exuding a cozy and inviting vibe.

Mochi Waffles with Kuromitsu Syrup + Ice cream

We started with the Mochi Waffles with Kuromitsu Syrup ($8.50) from the latest addition to the mochi series, accompanied by their signature Japanese Flavoured Handcrafted Ice Cream (from $5 onwards) made with Hokkaido milk. We went for the Lavender Hojicha and Samurai Blue Sea Salt Ice Cream, which perfectly complemented the soft and chewy texture of the aromatic mochi waffles. Additionally, the Kuromitsu Syrup provided extra sweetness to the already indulgent dessert.

Mochi Ice Cream

If the mochi waffles are too filling, you can go for the Mochi Ice Cream ($6 onwards). It comes with your preferred choice of ice cream and is wrapped in exceptionally soft and sticky sweet rice dough.

Mochi Dorayaki

Next, we had the savory Mochi Dorayaki ($6.90), served with top-quality Hokkaido azuki red bean paste complemented by a soft and chewy mochi. The combination of flavor and texture was absolutely divine.

Strawberry Daifuku

If you are a huge fan of mochi, don't miss out on their freshly handmade Strawberry Daifuku ($6.90). The strawberry used in this dessert is incredibly fresh and coated with premium Hokkaido azuki red bean paste before being wrapped in mochi skin. It boasts a refreshing and sweet taste that is perfect for pleasing the palate.

Strawberry Matcha Dorayaki Cake

We also got to try Cafe Usagi TOKYO's new Strawberry Matcha Dorayaki Cake ($9.90), which comes with juicy strawberries and freshly matcha whipped cream sandwiched between two pieces of honey pancakes. This dessert is a perfect match of sweet and earthy flavors!

Matcha with Hokkaido Azuki Red Bean and Mochi Bread

Last but not least, we got to try the new mainstays at the cafe, featuring Matcha with Hokkaido Azuki Red Bean and Mochi Bread ($8.80/loaf). This bread has a delightful nutty taste and is incredibly light and chewy.

Drinks

For all the matcha lovers out there, Cafe Usagi TOKYO's Iced Uji Matcha Latte ($6.80) is a must-try for an authentic taste of matcha. This drink has a delicious non-sweetened flavor, with a robust umami and earthy matcha taste that is sure to satisfy your cravings. Of course, there's also something for Hojicha lovers featuring the Iced Hojicha Latte ($6.80). This delectable drink features a strong roasted and nutty flavor that is both rich and flavorful.

If you are looking for something to warm you up, you may opt for the Lavender Hojicha Pot ($7.90). It is made with Hojicha tea leaves delicately harvested from Kyoto and Sencha tea leaves from Kyushu, Miyazaki. Inspired by the crowd's favourite lavender earl grey, Japanese Chef/Creative Director Yuka Shigeno also infuses the traditional tea with real lavender flowers.

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for an authentic taste of Japanese desserts, I highly recommend you head down with your friends or loved ones. Not only the desserts here were absolutely delicious, but it is also reasonably priced.
