Café Natsu Review: New Menu Includes Wagyu Hamburg Bowl Set and Uji Matcha Kakigori

Café Natsu— a name that may you may be familiar with as they opened their first outlet in May on Joo Chiat Road and a second one in December at Orchard last year. And here's some exciting news for you! They have just rolled out a fresh menu that you can add to your brunch options for this weekend.

Appetisers

To start off, we decided to go with Karaage ($14) and Chawanmushi ($8). The Karaage boasts a gorgeous golden brown hue and is seasoned perfectly with Dong Bei spices. The chicken is flavourful, and the texture presents a delightful combination of a crispy outer coating and a tender, juicy interior.

Unlike any Chawanmushi we've tasted before, this one stands out with its abundance of umami flavors and delightful additions like fresh ikura, clams, and snow fungus. It is velvety soft and melts in the mouth upon each bite.

Mains

We ordered the Pork Katsu Sando ($26) that comes with thick and succulent pork katsu sandwiched between two slices of toasted shokupan, smeared with savory doubanjang aioli, and garnished with sliced green apples and fresh lettuce. It also comes with a generous portion of fries with two dipping sauces- yuzu kosho mayo dip and doubanjang aioli.

The sando is an explosion of flavors, from the perfectly seasoned pork katsu to the rich and savory doubanjang aioli, all complemented by the refreshing touch of sour green apples. It is also worth noting that the yuzu kosho mayo dip is an absolute delight, offering a delightful blend of citrusy notes and a refreshing hint of yuzu flavour.

Next, we had the irresistible Wagyu Hamburg Bowl Set ($36), a definite highlight among the must-try offerings! It features a bed of chestnut mushroom rice adorned with oroshi (grated daikon radish), wagyu hamburg, and an onsen egg. The wagyu hamburg was expertly cooked and seasoned, perfectly complementing the aromatic flavours of the chestnut mushroom rice.

Desserts

To end the meal, we treated ourselves to Uji Matcha Kakigori ($14) and Zenzai ($12). The Uji Matcha Kakigori was a true refresher, served with a tower of matcha-flavored shaved ice, nata de coco, coconut foam, and gula melaka sauce. The matcha-flavored shaved ice was aromatic, and the gula melaka added a delightful boost to the overall flavour of the dessert.

We also have Zenzai, featuring a warm azuki bean soup accompanied by kiri mochi and tang yuan- making it the perfect go-to dessert choice to savor on a rainy day. This comforting dessert boasts a mild sweetness with a hint of nutty flavor.

Drinks

Lastly, we couldn't resist trying some beverages to quench our thirst. We opted for the Yuzu Spritz ($8), a delightful concoction with a mildly sweet taste complemented by refreshing citrus notes. Additionally, we enjoyed the House Brewed Kombucha ($8) in the Strawberry Umeboshi flavor, which offered a perfect blend of umami richness with a subtle hint of sourness.

Final Thoughts

The cafe's ambiance won us over with its inviting coziness, and the food surpassed our expectations with its impressive flavors. Without a doubt, it's a place worth visiting to explore their new menu, and we recommend trying the Chawanmushi and Wagyu Hamburg Bowl Set.
