Review: YAYOI Unveils New Menu Featuring Customisable Meals With a Variety of Soup Bases and Toppings

Known for its popular Teishoku set meals, YAYOI has recently revamped its menu to bring customizable meals to suit your taste palette.

We went down to the Bugis+ outlet, located at level one, directly beside the famed Japanese confectionery chain, Châteraisé. The restaurant gives off a cozy ambience- furnished with a minimalistic interior featuring warm hanging lamps and wooden furniture.

DIY Kaminabe Zen set (from $24.90++)

We tried one of its signature items, DIY Kaminabe Zen set. You can have a choice of 9 unique soup bases (such as Shoyu Gobo, Tuffle Wafu, and Tomato Cheese) and toppings (including Pork Belly, Hotate, Prawn, and Seafood). We decided to try its new flavour, Truffle Wafu with Seafood.

It was served on a paper hotpot packed with ingredients like prawns, hotate, salmon, and assorted vegetables. The soup is sweet with a mild taste of truffle- if you are a fan of truffles, this might be a little light for you. Served alongside is a plate of fresh thick salmon, salad, 2 pieces of crispy deep-fried tempura, and a bowl of rice.

DIY Hoba Yaki Zen set (from $24.90++)

We also tried the DIY Hoba Yaki Zen set that allows you to pick from 3 flavours of miso pasteWasabi Mayo, Karamiso, and Tomato Cheese and a selection of meat — Chicken Steak, Pork Steak, Hotate, and more! We went for the Wasabi Mayo and Pork Steak.

The meat was served on a small grill with a dried magnolia leaf that gives it an extra flavour alongside the savoury wasabi mayo paste that hits your nose! Not forgetting to mention that the meat was really tender.

Tonkatsu Teishoku set ($16.90++)

Next up, we had the Tonkatsu Teishoku set served with miso soup, salad, and rice. It has a crispy layer of deep-fried panko breadcrumbs, and the meat is so juicy and tender. What a comforting dish!

Mentai Mayo Tamagoyaki Soft ($7.90++)

Lastly, we also got the soft and fluffy Mentai Mayo Tamagoyaki Soft, served in bite-sized, topped with a generous amount of savoury mentaiko sauce. Oishii!

Final Thoughts

The dishes were delicious, especially the DIY Hoba Yaki Zen set with Wasabi Mayo paste and juicy meat. We would highly recommend you head down to any of their outlets to try their new DIY customisable menu!
